Big Bone Lick State Park, Kentucky
Weather: mid-80’s humid, periods of rain and periods of sun
The rain from Hurricane Isaac followed us all the way here
and it caught up with us last night. There was LOTS of pouring rain for most of
the night. Today the rain has been intermittent, but it has not kept us from
enjoying ourselves!
We headed back over to the Creation Museum to finish what we
did not see yesterday. It turned out that we actually did see everything
yesterday-so we quickly went through the gift shop so the kids could get a
souvenir. While we all agreed that the Museum was nice and we enjoyed it, I
don’t think that honestly it was worth the cost, nor did it necessitate a 2-day
visit. We went through the whole thing in about 4 hours-that included the
outdoor sections and inside. We really were not rushed-we stopped and read
almost everything and even watched all of the movies that they had to offer
along the way. Anyways-glad we did it,
won’t do it again J
On a back-road drive this morning we happened upon a little
corner that was called Rabbit Hatch Historical Preserve. Evidently it was the
site of a Kentucky militia back in the days of the War Between the States.
There were some old buildings and a general store that did not look like we
could pass it up. We stopped and an older man was sitting on the front porch of
the general store. We asked him if it was someplace we could go inside? He said
the lady who ran it wasn’t there yet, but he’d be happy to open it up for us!
It turned out to be exactly what we thought it might be-a really old general
store with all of the usual things-some useful stuff, old tin signs, jars of
jams and homemade mustards, t-shirts, etc. The man asked us where we were from
and turned out that he was once stationed at NAS Pax river back in the 50’s
after he had served in the Korean War. Neat stuff! Eric got a cool shirt and we
were on our way.
We made another stop at Graeter’s for some more of that
fabulous ice cream-everyone got a different flavor today.
As long as it’s not pouring, we are planning on another hike
before the day is up, and getting a load of laundry done before we move on to
the next spot!
One of the challenging things we have found while traveling
that we did not expect was finding places to fill up with air-I think I
mentioned that before. We decided that we should have brought our small air
compressor and that would have eliminated that problem. So today we also found
a Lowes and got a small air compressor to keep in the RV so we can put air in
any of the 10 tires on both vehicles any time we need it-which seems to be more
often than we anticipated!
Meals today: Breakfast-cereal for the kids, eggs for the
grownups
Lunch-packed
sandwiches at the museum
Dinner-Lasagna
from the freezer (cooked in our oven) and salad
There are so many barns here in Kentucky that have these different "quilt block" designs painted on the sides of the barn. So far we can't find anyone who can tell us what they mean!
